We often use the term to express apathy. We're using it to in this series to express the opposite...the complete surrender of rights, privileges and liberties...doing whatever it takes to express love in order to be a blessing to the world. The series, based on 1 Corinthians 8-11, will challenge us to practice self-denying love whenever our rights and freedoms clash with the needs of others. The focus of attention for believers in Corinth may seem strange to us: Should a Christian consume meat previously offered in sacrifice to idols? Or, would eating the meat mean some involvement in idolatry? This is not our issue. But the principles that Paul gives these believers to address their issue are principles that apply to us on two levels. On one level, the principles give us guidelines regarding practices where the Bible is silent. Examples: attitudes toward card playing, dancing, computer games, the moderate use of alcohol, etc. But, for Paul, there is always a higher level. The call to follow Jesus Christ involves much more than whether or not you should ever forgo your right to drink wine with your meal or watch a particular movie. The call to follow Jesus is a call to die to self and to rights in order to serve the One who gave up His rights to serve us (Phil 2:5-8).
