Annual & Semi-Annual Meetings
Anyone is welcome to attend the congregational meetings to hear what’s going on at Calvary Church, but only current members can vote with a “yea” or “nay.” (One of many reasons to consider becoming a member…). The Annual Meeting is held in the fourth week of June, and the Semi-Annual Meeting is held in the fourth week of January.
Calvary Church is led by the Elder Board, which currently has nine members—a Church Chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer, Senior Pastor, and five additional elders. These elected members are leaders of the church in life, thought, and ministry who use 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:6-9 as a model for conduct in their lives.
Current Elder Board Members
Betsy has been a part of the Calvary Church community since 1999 and now attends church with her husband Brent and their two elementary-age boys. Her hobbies include running (in the summer), reading, and lake-time with the family. She’s Assistant Professor of Strategic Communication at the U of M, and carves out time to serve on a past Pastoral Search Team, a Strategic Planning team, and volunteering with KidJam and early childhood. You will often see her smiling face behind the White Bear Campus Welcome Center desk, as she loves being captain of that team, and helping people get connected at Calvary. She also is excited to be part of the Elder Board leadership team.
Mark Anderson, Treasurer
Mark and his wife Maggie reside in Arden Hills, and have gotten very familiar with the drive to Calvary Church as they’ve been attending since 1984. They’ve also been married since 1984, and have five married kids and seven grandkids. They enjoyed serving in kid’s ministry for 25 years, and have been shepherding the Young Married & Families Life Group since 2014. Maggie (or Mimi, as the grandkids call her…) serves as a MOPS mentor mom, and Mark is currently mentoring men. They both enjoy outdoor activities and spending time with grandkids. Mark is “CFO and Dream Manager” at Impact, a direct marketing company. He’s honored to use his business/finance acumen to serve as Treasurer on the Elder Board.
Guy and Rhonda Bristol started attending Calvary in 2001 with their two daughters, Jodi and Meredith. Guy’s worked in the medical device industry since 1992 and recently joined Inspire Medical Systems as the Quality Systems Director. First a Dragon then a Tommie, he earned his B.S. in Physics at the U of M—Moorhead, and his MBA from the University of St. Thomas. The Bristol’s are both very involved at Calvary—Rhonda in traditional worship choir and worship team, and in the mentoring program, and Guy enjoys teaching Bible classes and mentoring as well. He’s also on the First Impressions Team (FIT), serving as the lead user for the Contemporary Worship Service at Roseville Campus. They’ve found great connections through the Small Group they’ve been in for almost two decades. For summer fun, he likes to water ski or just be on the lake. Family vacations are always a highlight, and he also loves to hike in national parks, do ancestry research, and dive into a good book. Guy joined the Elder Board team in July 2020.
Chuck Hannema, Church Chair
Chuck is third in line for the Elder Board record for longest time at Calvary Church, having attended since 1985. (See Mark Anderson and Jason Schmidt’s bios…) He and his wife Liz have two adult children and a son-in-law. Over the years, he’s served in a variety of ways at Calvary – in kids ministry, and twice as treasurer. As a recently-retired Bethel University Business and Econ prof, he was happy to channel his energy into chairing the Elder Board and Building Committee. The latter role has been a huge commitment during the campus remodels, and we thank him for his leadership with that team! After many hours of networking with the congregation, staff, architects, and construction leaders for the campus remodels, he enjoys tennis (for fun) and sells real estate (for fun and income).
Lisa learned how to cook tater tots, waterski, and trust Jesus while growing up in northern Minnesota, and her family also served as missionaries in East Africa when she was young. She and her husband traveled around the globe sharing the good news through a magical illusion show for several years before having a family. Lisa is so in love with her husband, two teens, and two pre-teens. She works in culture transformation as Co-Founder of Trust Edge Leadership Institute, the company she and her husband David founded in 1999. She also loves to teach and enjoys amateur (and sometimes experimental) veterinarian practices on their hobby farm in Grant Township. Lisa holds her identity in Christ as her most defining feature and her mission is to shine his light and love to those around her. She’s served in kids ministry and Impact (missions) at Calvary Church, but her favorite role is serving on the prayer team during Worship Services.
Jon and his wife Jenny have been highly-involved members of Calvary Church since 2007. They live in Shoreview with their three young kids, and are regular KidJam volunteers. They’ve also been Young Marrieds leaders at Roseville and are currently the warm and welcoming leaders of Young Families Life Group at White Bear Campus. Jon has served in Jr. High Ministry (Fusion), on a Strategic Planning team, and the Transform Campaign launch team. He’s owner/consultant of Integrity Employee Benefits, LLC. For fun, the family likes to boat on White Bear Lake and play music together. (Not necessarily at the same time…) Jon’s level-headed leadership is a boon to the Elder Board.
Jason has been attending Calvary Church since 1979, making him the longest-attending member on the Elder Board. He and wife Heather have been married since 1995 and have four sons, with two in college. His areas of service have been in early childhood, KidJam, DivorceCare program (with kids), Long-Range Planning Task Force, nominating teams, search teams, leading Grades 9-12 (Summit) on Pelican Rapids, MN Impact short-term missions trip, and joining short-term team serving in Haiti. Jason and Heather are long-time Foundation Builder Life Group fans, and he loves greeting for the 11am contemporary service at Roseville Campus. He also loves boating, water sports, biking, the Minnesota State Fair, and food—eating it, making it, anything to do with food.
Carole and husband Jim were married for 46 years, most of their years together spent in pastoral ministry. She has three married sons and four grandchildren, and enjoys playing the flute and writing/editing for the History Center (the archives of Bethel University and Converge). She lives in Little Canada, and has a two-part history with Calvary Church—first as a member for 14 years prior to marrying Jim, and then again when she rejoined in 2013. She’s found connections in the Ambassador Life Group as well as the flute ensemble. Carole’s secret claim to fame is that she is the daughter of former Bethel University president, Carl Lundquist. Her quiet, calm leadership is appreciated on the Elder Board.
Shawn Winters, Senior Pastor
Shawn has served as Senior Pastor at Calvary Church since 2014. His wife, Becky, works as a school library teacher and partners with Shawn in many ways at Calvary Church. They have four teenage/twenty-something children (three sons and one daughter) and one daughter-in-law. The family enjoys annual road trip vacations that have taken them from California to Maine and many states in between. Shawn runs for fun, and gets super pumped about March Madness each spring. As Senior Pastor, he’s the preacher, leader, and shepherd for Calvary Church and sees his primary call “to equip (God’s) people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up.” (Eph. 4:12) He loves building relationships, and seeing Jesus transform lives.
